New lookouts set to enhance visitor experience at iconic coastal landmarks

Published: December 15, 2023

A stunning new cantilevered viewing area at the Twelve Apostles, along Victoria’s celebrated south-west coastline, is nearing completion.

The Saddle Lookout, which will offer visitors a fresh perspective on the iconic landmark is replacing infrastructure that was said to be no longer able to adequately cater to the booming number of visitors.

Parks Victoria says the lookout will also improve accessibility and safety. Construction has now recommenced after a break over the winter months, and the lookout is expected to be completed in late summer.

Another eye-catching new lookout is also being built at the nearby Loch Ard Gorge precinct, which will bring visitors up close to ‘The Blowhole’, a cutting in the land that fills with roaring water from the Southern Ocean.

The design of the new attraction, which will be built by the Simpson Construction Company, has been led by the Eastern Maar community, ensuring that it reflects the significant environmental and cultural values of the area.

Works on the Blowhole Lookout are expected to begin shortly after the busy Christmas–New Year visitor period.

“It’s a busy and exciting time in Port Campbell National Park with projects that celebrate this special landscape and ensure it provides a memorable experience for the millions of people who visit,” said Jason Borg, Parks Victoria Regional Director.  “These new viewing areas will improve accessibility and better showcase the dramatic scenery of this special environment.”

Both lookout projects are part of Stage One of the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan, which aims to improve opportunities for visitors, strengthen the local economy, and provide employment opportunities through sustainable tourism.

Well that’s great timing as we aim to drive the GOR after Easter next year. Well done Parks Victoria.

Last time we were there, just before Covid-19 arrived that location was overflowing with bus loads of Chinese tourists taking selfies. They’ll love the new lookout.
