A huge fireball that was captured on film shooting across the Tasmanian skyline yesterday has once again energised the ‘we are not alone’ theorists.
Grey nomads who commonly spend their evenings staring into the night sky are often among the most enthusiastic UFO spotters and will no doubt have their own theories about the latest sighting. Although, the federal government’s air navigation services provider, Airservices Australia, is now saying the object captured on hundreds of mobile phones and cameras was nothing more than an aircraft passing over Australian airspace, many remain convinced that all is still not as it seems.
A few years ago, a spate of mysterious object sightings near Katherine sparked a mini grey nomad tourism boom and it is a subject discussed on our grey nomad forum boards.
The most striking footage of the recent Tassie ‘UFO’ was shot by Sorell resident Lee-Anne Peters and Facebook users rushed to speculate that it was either something to do with the International Space Station, a meteorite, fairies or, of course, spacecraft from another galaxy.
“It was very slow moving, not like the high jets I’ve seen before. I got out the binoculars and thought it must be a meteorite,” Ms Peters told the ABC. “I was sure it was something burning up from space … but now, I am sure it was just a plane with the sunrise highlighting its contrails.”
Others though were not so sure.
“No longer will the population outcast you for believing in aliens,” one Facebook user posted.
The ABC reports that it’s not the first time UFO’s have been seen over Tasmania.
In 1978, a pilot disappeared over the Bass Strait after reporting a UFO.
In 2013 a couple saw strange balls of light floating above their property.
And, in 2015, three men saw a light the size of a golf ball, which shrunk to a small point of light after they tried to approach it.
