Another shocking camping tragedy has once again highlighted the potential dangers of gas barbecues. A 14-year-old girl has died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after a barbie was left overnight in the porch of her family’s tent in England.
The girl’s mother, step-father and 11-year-old brother were all also found unconscious in the tent. They were taken to hospital and given oxygen treatment. A female doctor staying at the beauty spot deep in the Shropshire countryside frantically performed CPR on the teen after members of the extended family group in another tent had raised the alarm.
Ambulance crews arrived 15 minutes later but were unable barbecue might have been brought into the tent to help the family keep warm with night-time temperatures plunging to around 2C.
Phil Wright, who owns the The Baron at Bucknell campsite with his wife Debra, said the family was part of a larger group made up of the mother’s two sisters and their respective partners and children, staying in three separate tents.
“It’s tragic … no-one has done anything wrong,” he said. “They’ve just not realised the dangers of disposable barbecues.” Police said the girl’s death was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.
