Wow! Visitors stunned by sight of water cascading down Uluru

Published: February 3, 2022

Anyone visiting Uluru in the last few days has been treated to an incredible and rare phenomenon.

Heavy rain in the usually barren region in Central Australia can cause water to collect at the top of Uluru and then spill over the sides, with dozens of waterfalls then spectacularly falling down the massive monolith.

News.com.au reports that this week’s weather event caused exactly that to happen. The magical sight was captured by Instagram user Altair, who posted pics on his account.

As many grey nomads will be all too aware, much of Central Australia has been hit by heavy rains over the past two weeks with the Northern Territory essentially cut off.

While water cascading down Uluru this week is extremely rare, similar footage was actually taken back in November when the rock was drenched by 22mm of rain in one night.

Parks Australia told news.com.au that, while the 22mm of rain didn’t sound like much, the annual average rainfall is just under 300mm – so to have that amount in one evening is quite significant.
Waterfalls also cascaded down Uluru in October 2020, with tourists stopping to view the magical sight after 30mm of rain fell on October 22, 2020.
