Is Uluru golf course plan a commercial step too far?

Published: April 28, 2016

Even though there has been a lot of talk recently about opening up some of our national parks to commercial ventures, a proposal by Greg Norman to create a golf course at the bottom of Uluru is still a startling one.

According to Sky News, the Australian golfing legend mapped out plans for the course after a recent visit to the rock with Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles.

“On my invitation he’s come to the Northern Territory looking at what sporting and economic investments he can make in the Territory,” Mr Giles said. “Yulara and Uluru was one particular visit, we will see what will come of that.”

Sky News says that the ‘Shark’ has already had preliminary discussions with the operators of the Ayers Rock Resort and has already begun drawing up rough plans.

Mr Giles says he welcomes investment that can grow tourism and employment opportunities for indigenous Australians.

“I know that Greg’s been fortunate enough to build a golf course at the foot of the pyramids in Egypt,” he said. “Wouldn’t it be fantastic to see, as an additional opportunity, not just having a resort and cultural opportunities at Uluru, but also the chance to have a shot of golf.”

Back in 2011, plans for a golf course about 20km from Uluru were shelved after a hydrologist report warned of water usage and draining the local aquifer. There were also reportedly concerns about erosion, stray golf balls and the colour clash of green fairways and desert red when viewed from the air.

Leave it in its natural beauty, plenty of other places they can go build golf courses just to make a few dollars, this country is being ruined by people wanting to make a fast buck

Nooooo I thought the idea was to go bush to see the bush and what it has to offer
Golf at the Rock noooooooo

Time to revisit this with the DP World Tour taking off. You can’t make everyone happy least of all those that want to see humanity wiped from the planet. Make this place a world class destination and increase its sustainability my making it more accessible with economies of scale and tasteful infrastructure. Course architecture has come a long way.
