The popular Wagga Beach Caravan Park has been given five years to find a new home.
The local council in the inland New South Wales town of Wagga Wagga has decided not to renew the park’s lease when it expires in 2019, saying its current site next to the Murrumbidgee River is not “socially sustainable”. It says the park caters for few community members while dominating the riverfront site.
Wagga’s Daily Advertiser newspaper reports that the caravan park was granted a 20-year lease of the site in 1999, but the deal with council contained no option for either party to automatically extend the deal.
Wagga City Council is working on a Riverside Masterplan which will include $1 million worth of infrastructure improvements and the caravan park in its current location is not part of its pans.
An alternative site for a caravan park just out of town at the Wiradjuri Reserve has been identified.
Mayor Rod Kendall said difficult decisions had to be made and it believed moving the caravan park and implementing the masterplan would have long-term positive impacts, with the potential to trigger an economic upswing for the city.

Shame they have to move it was nice and handy to the shopping centre of Wagga Wagga not to mention right on the banks of the river,nice and close for a refreshing swim we stayed there in January this year in the middle of 40 plus heatwave
Have never stayed there but looks like an ideal opportunity to build a van park from the ground up. Catering for possibly holiday makers with kids on one end and for the Nomad market at the other. They should be able to build after listening to what the people want rather than what they think they need. Jumping castles, swings and slides, bouncy mats. Only used for a few weeks of the year whereas a low cost concrete pad that is level can be used all year round. Might put the area on a long term plan to visit.
