New free camping area to be trialled at Warragamba

Published: November 3, 2017

A free camping area for self-contained vehicles has been given the green light at Warragamba at the foot of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.

A 12-month trial of the new site at Warragamba Recreation Reserve will allow self-contained motorhomes, caravans and campervans to stay for a maximum of two nights. There is already an RV dump point within the reserve. The council will now install signage, an automatic boom gate, linemarking and waste bins before December.

Councillor Matt Gould has previously told the Wollondilly Advertiser that the RV site would boost the town’s tourism.

“I am looking forward to the site getting up and running,” he said. “There are a lot of grey nomads who come to the shire but they don’t have anywhere to stay … there is an existing market out there that we have not tapped into yet.”

The Advertiser reports RV users will be able to access the facility via an automated boom gate installed at the entrance of the reserve car park.

The boom gate will be open during daylight hours and overnight visitors will gain access to the site by contacting the council’s after-hours service. This service will record visitor’s details and provide them with a pin code for entry through the boom gate.

Wollondilly Council has allocated $35,000 from the budget for the project which it hopes will strengthen the local economy.

Cr Gould has previously said if the trial period was successful then he would like to see another RV site built at nearby Bargo.

Does anyone know exactly what self contained means? We have a portable toilet and a container to catch grey water, but no bathroom as such. Are we classed as self contained?

No Charley. Self contained means your HAVE to catch ALL waste water in holding tanks. You CANNOT run any water onto the ground. You must then dispose of ALL your waste grey and black into a designated dump point.

Black water contained in the holding tank. Grey water collected in a container. Nothing on the ground, all waste water taken to the designated dump point. So what is the difference between portable holding tanks and fixed holding tanks? Result is the same.

If you can stop overnight and not drop anything on the ground you are selfcontained

If you stick to what has been mentioned then the council should save their $35,000 as the only users of the site would be the big 5 wheelers or the big buses. I would think that 90% of campers in caravans and camper vans have NO tanks for grey water. Black water in tanks and dropped in the dump spots.

Warragamba Recreation Reserve is operational.
Dogs are OK on a lead and their waste must be collected.
