Phew! What a scorcher! Grey nomads across much of the country have been sweltering though a near unprecedented heatwave … and it’s not done yet!
Temperatures in Queensland are expected to remain well above average all this week, and New South Wales has been just as scorching with Sydney ‘enjoying’ 10 days in a row above 35 degrees.
Caravanners and motorhomers with air conditioning have been heading to powered sites at caravan parks to help them keep their cool, while others have been seeking out coastal breezes, and places to take a refreshing dip.
In places like Birdsville, though, where temperatures have been well in to the mid-40’s, the iconic pub is probably the best bet to escape the heat.
“Once it gets past 42, 43 degrees you don’t notice a huge difference, really,” Ben Fullagar, who runs the Birdsville Hotel, told the Courier-Mail. “You kind of stop reading the numbers and just say hot … I’ve had to keep an eye on a couple of the staff and make sure they are hydrated … we’ve got really good air con.”
In regional New South Wales, Bourke hit 41C and Wilcannia 43.3C. And Moree has seen the mercury top 35C for the past 41 days.
Meanwhile, in Victoria, Melbourne is recovering after being battered by heavy rain and storms.
