Caravan dealership offers weighbridge service … and free towing course

Published: April 30, 2026

As awareness of the importance of correct caravan weight and weight distribution continues to grow, it is perhaps inevitable that more RV dealerships will begin to offer a weighbridge service.

Certainly, it would offer significant peace of mind to those buying a new van, who might have been unsettled by stories of rigs being non-compliant pretty much as soon as a few items are packed into them.

Jayco Adelaide is one business that can see the logic, and says it has become the first caravan dealership in South Australia to introduce a fully private, on-site weigh facility.

The weighbridge is designed specifically for caravans, trailers, tow vehicles, 4WDs and motorhomes.

It says it means no more waiting at public weigh stations, and will allow customers to check their weights accurately, safely, and conveniently before hitting the road.

A Jayco Adelaide spokesperson said a growing number of customers had been expressing concerns about weights, compliance and safe setup.

“Many people are understandably unsure whether their towing combination is legal once fully loaded,” they said. “This service allows customers to make informed decisions early, whether that’s adjusting payload, redistributing weight, making vehicle adjustments or reassessing their towing vehicle suitability.”

The cost of the weighbridge service is $250, regardless of whether the RV is purchased from Jayco Adelaide or elsewhere. It is available to anyone who already owns a caravan and wants peace of mind, and the caravan does not need to be a Jayco.

“Using our weighbridge, customers can measure key figures such as tow vehicle weight, caravan weight, ball weight and overall combination weight, giving them clear insight into whether their setup is within legal limits,” said the spokesperson. “The weighbridge is operated directly by Jayco Adelaide, with trained staff guiding customers through the process and explaining the results in clear, practical terms … the aim isn’t just to provide numbers, but to educate customers so they can tow confidently and safely.”

In a bid to help grey nomads and others hit the open road in a safer and more confident way, the dealership also offers a complimentary RV Life Safe Towing Course.

Designed to cater to all levels of towing experience, the course covers a wide range of topics from weights, hitches, loads, emergencies, towing, highway driving and much more.

“As awareness around towing compliance continues to grow, providing transparent, practical services like this gives customers greater confidence when making a significant purchase,” said the Jayco Adelaide spokesperson.

While the course is free to everyone, bookings are essential! Click here for more information.

I believe every caravan dealership needs a weigh bridge and it needs to be compliant for registration. We are in a legal battle atm because our caravan is 70kg over the tow ball weight empty. If we could have had it weighed professionally before purchase we would not have purchased the van.

Your not the only one. A recent one I came across was 250+- kg over plated weight empty. Put the owners in line for prosecution and no insuarance payout

This should be mandetory. Any van seller, private or dealer . They parameters should be the regular towing vehicle must match the van in the capacities on the vin plates.

Wow, that is a little cute. The dealer provides a weigh bridge at $250 per use being something they should have on site as standard kit. Many stories of inaccurate weights discovered compared to what the compliance plate states. Second point. The public is paying an over-the-top fee per visit to fund the dealerships equipment. Nice one.
