A caravan has lost its wheel while travelling along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.
TheĀ incident blocked the west-bound lane near Wattle Hill for an hour, and police diverted traffic around the area until the caravan was towed away.
A Port Campbell police spokesman told the Warrnambool Standard that the wheel fell off the caravan and ended up under the vehicle, leaving short scrape marks on the road.
The break down happened on a windy section of the Great Ocean Road which has double lines. That stretch of road has been the scene of a number of accidents in recent years, some of them fatal.
Last month, a caravan lost its wheel on a roundabout in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, throwing a grey nomad coupleās five-day-old Big Lap into chaos.
Where can you see maps that tell you if the roads are extremely steep or windy and not suitable for caravans?
You picked a fine time to leave me Loose Wheel…!
Very good retort, but not good for the Nomads travelling. We wheel for them & hope they are safe & wheel wish we all respect it can happen to anyone.
When I bought my van a couple of years ago, I was told to check the tightness of my wheel nuts before I use it EVERY TIME, & just to reinforce the message, there is a sticker above each wheel arch ( it is a dual axel), telling me. So I do.
We lost a wheel last year. Although we handled the van and steered it off the road, the sight was a mess. The wheel caused damage to the structural part of the van below and above the door. We check wheels everyday when travelling, there was no indication of anything amiss beforehand.
Lost a wheel a couple of years ago, fortunately on a dual axle van with leaf compensating springs This was not due to not tightening the nuts properly but because ALL 5 studs sheared off level with the brake drum.
I had checked for tightness, but think the last time they had been done up it was with a rattle gun on maximum pressure. Did a fair bit of damage to the side of the van and to the Stub axle too. Good job I was well insured.
