Hmmm! It seems one major newspaper has been using the April Fool’s Day ‘joke’ tradition to whip up anti-grey nomad fervour.
The Herald-Sun reported yesterday that drivers in the Northern Territory would likely be driven around the bend by new legislation making it illegal to overtake grey nomads in caravans and campervans.
Furthermore, it said that failure to give way to camping vehicles could result in a $300 on-the-spot fine or six months licence suspension with six demerit points.
The paper continued the joke by quoting one Aaron Whole from the ‘Australian Recreational Speed Enthusiasts’ group. Check out the acronym!
“Despite what the old timers may think, they aren’t the only users of the road,” he is quoted as saying. “Many of our members travel to the Territory each year for holidays and want equal rights.”
The move though was apparently welcomed by the ‘Official League of Drivers In Each State’, with the interestingly named spokesperson, Gee Zer, saying: “It’s about time older drivers were given the respect we deserve.”

Well in a way it pokes a sharper stick at the Mr Whole’s of the world, so unless overdone I guess we can carry the odd joke
