Will a van park lure lots of visitors to Lancelin?

Published: July 16, 2012

Plans are afoot to develop afoot to a new caravan park at Lancelin in Western Australia. Despite opposition from some local residents, Gingin Shire has just voted to rezone unallocated Crown land as a tourism precinct.

The council’s “in-principle support” for the rezoning of land adjacent to Hopkins Street and Casserley Way has sparked a great deal of debate in the tiny coastal community. A public meeting held in Lancelin about 12 months ago drew about 200 people, many of whom were unhappy about the possibility of extra noise and traffic around a quiet residential area.

However, Gingin Shire president Michael Aspinall is adamant that a new caravan park site is imperative if the town is to survive. “The crayfishing industry is dying and this town will die with it if something isn’t done,” he told the ‘in my community’ newspaper.  “The town now relies on tourism, so we need somewhere to house visitors.”

And, while many holiday home owners are unhappy with the Shire’s decision to develop the park opposite a residential area, most permanent town residents reportedly support the plan. “We need to make a living here,” Lancelin Community Resource Centre co-ordinator Lorna Murray told ‘in my community’. “Those who do not live here permanently want us to remain stagnant, so they can have their holidays.”
