Dump point to help grey nomads say ‘yes’ to Yass?

Published: October 17, 2014

Many of Australia’s small towns are declaring their determination to attract more grey nomads … and increasing numbers of them are backing words with deeds.

The New South Wales community of Yass, less than an hour north of Canberra, has recently installed a new dump point and has improved parking for caravan and motorhome visitors.

Situated close to the junction of the Barton and Hume Highways, many thousands of grey nomads regularly pass within a few kilometres of Yass, and the local Chamber of Commerce wants more of them to turn into town.

“We’ve got to get them off the highway to get them to spend a bit of money,” the chamber’s secretary, George Dashwood, told the Yass Tribune. “We know the baby boomers are coming, we’ve just got to cater for their needs.”

The council has recently installed a new effluent dump site on Yass Valley Way outside of the community centre, and it has spent money resurfacing a parking space behind the Club House Hotel, just off the main street … but more can be done.

Mr Dashwood told the local newspaper that there weren’t enough signs pointing from the main street to the caravan parking, and that the existing signs were in the wrong spot.

The Yass Tribune also reports that plans to expand and refurbish the local caravan park are being considered.

A lot of towns could look at Condobolin and their free camp at Gum Bend Reserve. Travellers go out of their way to stay there. Yass could adopt the same strategy.to entice ppl into town. Word of mouth will do the rest.

Well I travel that way regularly and usually stop overnight at the Yass Service Centre.

But now I’ll be dropping in to Yass, having dinner, filling the tank, and buying breakfast. Great idea to make us welcome Yass

Good start Yass. Also think about sign posting to a park big enough to park the car and van and close enough to the town to walk to shops.
