The ‘Big Things’ craze which has helped add some unique tourism appeal to many small Australian towns has gone to the next level.
Not content to follow the fruity them of the likes of the Big Banana or the Big Pineapple, or the creatures trend of the Big Crocodile or the Big Koala, the western NSW town of Nyngan has come up with a truly unique ‘Big Bogan’ statute.
Standing five metres tall, the thonged ‘Aussie icon’ boasts a mullet, a singlet, a fishing rod, and has – of course – an esky (presumably full of stubbies) at his feet.
“The response has been very good, lots of interest,” said Bogan Shire Council mayor, Ray Donald.
The stated aim of the new iron statue is to draw more tourists to the town, which sits on the Bogan River at the junction of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways.
Apparently, stubby holders bearing a likeness of the Big Bogan and replicas of the statue will be on sale soon.
it looks like a good thing and I bet there will be a heap of interest and photos taken
that will mean a few more travellers will turn up at Nyngan for a visit
I hope so anyway good for the town
Advertising yourself as a “bogan” town is nothing to be proud of.
I’ll be avoiding the place.
