Will tourists flock to the Apple Isle to walk out?

More walking tracks for Tasmania are on the cards as authorities there seek ways to attract more tourists to the island.

The Sunday Tasmanian has revealed a proposal for the 80km Wellington Ranges walk. A feasibility study will reportedly be funded under the Intergovernmental Agreement on Forestry. Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania chief executive Luke Martin said he wanted to know who would manage the walk.

“It’s come out of the blue but the concept of more multi-day walks is certainly something we want to see,” he told the Daily Mercury. “There are also plans for the Tarkine and Bay of Fires.”

However, he says the initiatives must not come at the expense of the $33 million Three Capes Track. Hobart Walking Club president Rupert Manners said walking tourism could become a big money earner.

“The more walking tracks we have in Tasmania the better it is because it’s good for visitors,” he told the Daily Mercury.”It’s a shame when you see what New Zealand and other countries do with walking and you see how pathetic we are. Walking tourism is growing in every country but we have the Overland Track, the South Cape track and one or two others and that’s it.”
