Heavy rain in Outback Australia is again throwing the travel plans of grey nomads and tourists into chaos.
Major roads and tracks have been closed throughout country South Australia, leaving dozens stranded. It’s the fifth similar rain event in as many weeks.
The ABC reports that up to 35 millimetres of rain fell in some parts, with the Oodnadatta Track closed between William Creek and Marree, and from Oodnadatta to William Creek and Coober Pedy.
The Strzelecki Track is also closed between Mt Hopeless and Lyndhurst, Farina to Mulgaria and Lyndhurst to Marree.
About 50 tourists are stranded at William Creek and more who were travelling by bus are stranded in Leigh Creek, Marree and Coober Pedy.
Outback pilot Trevor Wright told the ABC he will spend the day flying stranded tourists between towns.
“People are coming back from the Finke Desert Race and it’s the prime time for tourist season,” he said. “There’s so much moisture in the ground because of the continuous rain. It doesn’t take much to close roads and strand people.”
