‘If we want campers, we have to have campsites!’

Published: November 28, 2017

There’s a big push on in the Wollondilly Shire area south-west of Sydney to improve camping options and attract more grey nomads.

With national parks all around, gorgeous sandstone gorges and a number of attractive towns and villages, the region has a lot to offer travellers.

However, councillor Michael Banasik, says a huge tourism opportunity is being wasted … and he wants more camping sites developed on both public and private lands.

“We’ve got a big tourism drive in the area and with the launch of our new information centre it would be great to offer more places where people can camp out,” he told the Wolondilly Advertiser. “I was gobsmacked that Bents Basin and Yerranderie were the only camping spots within 50 kilometres of Picton.”

Cr Banasik said nature reserves around the dams like Warragamba Dam would be a great place to set up camping spaces.

He also suggested the council could work with property-owners to open up their lands for camping.

“Lots of people are doing AirBNB, so this is in that same vicinity,” he said. “We’ve got beautiful bushland in Wollondilly so we should make the most of it.”

Cr Banasik told the Advertiser that the addition of a campsite directory at the Wollondilly Information Centre would encourage more people to stay in the shire overnight.

“It’s another reason to get off the highway and actually spend some time in Wollondilly,” he said. “There’s clearly a lot of interest in camping.”

Cr Banasik will raise his notice of his pro-camping motion at the December 11 council meeting.
