Grey nomads do experience tyre troubles
Grey nomads and other travellers are being urged to keep their vehicles properly maintained in the wake of a terrifying accident in Victoria.
A woman was lucky to escape with only minor injuries after her campervan’s rear tyre blew out as she drove along the Midland Highway. The campervan travelled out of control for more than 100 metres in the direction of oncoming traffic before rolling.
The 37-year-old driver – who was travelling from Echuca to Bendigo with her two dogs –Â was taken to Bendigo Health for observation.
Leading Senior Constable Darren Sherger said the woman was lucky there was only minor traffic coming from the north. He appealed to travellers to ensure their tyres were roadworthy.
The highway was closed for two hours as CFA cleared leaking fuel.
How often do you check your tyres? Comment below.

Our camper an tyre blew out when we were sleeping above it, it could have really injured us if it happened while checking it out or preparing to repair. We hadn’t noticed, so it was a very funny incident waking us up, but we then changed it and it’s old friend for new tyres. Dodged a bullet there.
We’ve “dodged a bullet” twice now. We towed the van from Wilcannia up the Darling to Bethel on the way home to Brisbane last year and decided to rotate the tyres on the van. To our horror, both of the van tyres were cracked and delaminating where the bead meets the rim. New tyres all round.
The next lucky escape happened on our way back to Brisbane from Tasmania earlier this year. I’d been trying to get home on the rear tyres on the car and admittedly was really pushing my luck. We stayed a night at Collarenebri and I gave in and decide to put the spare on. To my horror the tyre I was swapping had almost no tread and a huge bulge on the inside, un-noticed by me.
I’ll be paying much more attention to my tyres, both van and car in future!
