Grey nomads will soon have a new camping option as they head north on the Indian Ocean Drive in Western Australia.
Yanchep National Park, about 40 kilometres north of Perth, is to trial allowing travellers to stay up to seven nights at the Henry White Oval. From July, there will be 10 camping sites available on bitumen for campervans or caravans, and 10 on the oval for tents.
Visitors will be able to book campsites online and receive a code for the campsite entry gate when they arrive.
There had been no camping allowed at the national park while the nearby Club Capricorn resort offered camping facilities, but Parks and Wildlife changed its position when the resort closed last year.
The department’s Swan Coastal district manager, Craig Olejnik, told the Community newspaper group that campsites would be created around the oval and in the existing parking area, and the centre of the oval would be re-vegetated with tuarts, peppermint and banksia trees.
“We’ve upgraded the toilet block so we have got hot water showers and flushing toilets,” he said.
There are picnic shelters at the oval and Mr Olejnik said, if the trial was a success, they would look at adding camp kitchens, barbecues and extra toilet facilities. There could eventually be up to 40 individual bays at the site.
Environment Minister Albert Jacob said more than 320,000 people visited the national park each year, and that the year-long trial would help determine the demand and the type of camping facilities that campers expect in the park.
“There is plenty to do at Yanchep with its historic buildings, limestone caves, coastal woodland and a 240m boardwalk in a koala enclosure,” he said. “There are activities to suit campers of all ages such as wildlife viewing, bushwalking, cycling, cave tours, Aboriginal tours or just relaxing in the picturesque surrounds.”
The trial is part of the Parks for People initiative to increase the number of affordable camping options within WA.
this is a lovely spot I would certainly recommend and use it myself but being a National Park I am assuming no dogs?
Hi Denise, Yes as you say it is within the national park so no dogs.
Would dogs be allowed in the campsite area. We have stayed in caravan parks outside National Parks and leave our little dog in the van and make short visits in and out of the park. Would really love to make use of this beautiful area if so.

Great, so close to home 60km for me good for a weekend getaway.
We are on our way down the west coast so would have no hestitation as we get closer to make a booking! We live on the road full time and gave experienced caravan parks being crammed during the grey nomad season…
Another dog owner wishing to know if the camp will accept our dog?? As permanent travellers we only go where dogs are welcome under control. Love the fact that you allow at least a week as many 24 hour camps does not allow for shopping and visiting all the places we intend to in leisure.

yah, this will be great. Instead of heading south where its cold we can head north where its a little warmer. I hope it lovely, a camp kitchen & BBQ’s would be a bonus.
