Are the not-so-grey nomads slowly taking over the caravan and camping scene?

While the American RV scene is obviously very different to the one here in Australia, it is always interesting to have a look at what is going on stateside to see if we can get some clues about future trends.

A recent study, conducted by IPSOS, on behalf of the US’s RV Industry Association found the average age of RV travellers in America was coming down. The study found that the median age of RV owners in the US has declined from 53 in 2021 to 49 in 2025, with 46% of owners now falling within the 35-54 age range.

Additionally, there has been a notable increase in first-time owners, who now comprise 36% of all RV owners.

The US’s RV Industry Association also said the study found RV owners were spending more time on the road, with the median number of days used per year rising to 30, a 50% increase over usage in 2021.

It says this suggests Americans had a deepening engagement with the RV lifestyle and a greater appreciation for the experiences it offers.

The study identified various RV user segments, ranging from casual weekend campers to family campers to escapists and adventure seekers. The most common activities enjoyed by American RV owners include motorsports (40%), fishing (39%) and hiking (33%).

Meanwhile, the trend of ‘boondocking’ or off-grid camping continues to gain traction among adventure seekers. Family RVing is also reportedly on the rise in the US, with 43% of owners reporting children under 18 in their household.

The report showed the top three motivators for purchasing an RV include spending time in nature (54%), simply unwinding and relaxing (52%), and visiting locations with natural beauty (49%).

Some 49% of American RVers also cite the ability to bring pets as a crucial factor in their decision.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that digital nomads are a growing presence in Australian camping areas, and the IPSOS study seemed to show a similar trend in the US. The report indicated that younger buyers are increasingly attracted to RV ownership as a means to accommodate remote work and alternative lifestyles. It said that 22% of US RVers have indicated that someone in their home currently works remotely, and among those working remotely, 54% indicate that work has been done from an RV.

And, the report also indicated that the RV boom was not slowing down any time soon, with a growing pool of potential customers who are eager to embrace the RV lifestyle.

America’s RV Industry Association said the RV industry was undergoing a significant transformation, fuelled by younger and more diverse buyers, evolving lifestyle needs, and increasing technological integration.

“By adapting to the needs of modern consumers—whether through innovative product design, enhanced financing options, or improved customer experiences—the RV industry is poised to thrive in the coming years,” it said.

Yes we’ve noticed that there are lots of retirees around that are about 10 years younger than us.
We were in the first wave of baby boomer retirees.
As we get too old to travel we’ll be replaced by retirees younger than us.
As thay get older they’ll be replaced by people younger than them & so it goes on.
You don’t live forever unfortunately.
Enjoy your travels while you can.
Life doesn’t end when you decide to stop travelling.
