A grey nomad has died and his wife injured in an accident on the Oxley Highway west of Wauchope in New South Wales.
The Daily Telegraph reports that a Toyota Prado towing a caravan had left the highway’s eastbound lane and crashed.
The driver, a man believed to be aged in his 70s, died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified. The passenger, a 71-year-old woman, was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital in a stable condition.
Officers from Mid North Coast Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding yesterday’s crash.
Police Inspector Stuart Campbell told the Telegraph that police were yet to determine the cause of the accident.
“Witnesses at the scene have described that there is a sweeping right hand bend which the driver hasn’t negotiated properly,” he said. “That has led to the driver veering off the road and the caravan has completely flipped.”
He told the Telegraph that it was likely there could be one of three factors at play, including a loss of concentration, tiredness or a medical episode.
“At this stage though it is undetermined what has caused the crash, but hopefully we’ll be able to find out the cause during course of the investigation,” he said.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
This is the second fatal accident involving caravanners in the last few days. Last Friday, a teenager died after his vehicle was in collision with a grey nomad couple’s 4WD and caravan on the Lachlan Valley Way near Cowra in the New South Wales Central West. The driver of the 4WD, a 78-year-old man, and a passenger, an 80-year-old woman, were airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition. Another teenager in the other car also suffered serious injuries.
