A couple has climbed out the window of their motorhome and swam to safety in their pyjamas this morning after they were swept away in floodwater during the wild weather event in Queensland.
Parts of the Wide Bay region copped an incredible 673mm of rain overnight and the water rose quickly at Ban Ban Springs early on Saturday,
Gayndah fire captain Ron Mitchell told the Courier Mail that the travelling couple, who had been enjoying a campfire just hours earlier, were swept away with their dog in their motorhome.
Firefighters and police were called to the scene shortly after 5am.
“They climbed out through the window and had to swim to the edge of the water,” Mr Mitchell said. “They were very fortunate that a couple had come through floodwater from down south and they heard the SOS call over a two-way radio … they made their way up to them and called for help.”
Mr Mitchell said it was likely a wall of water came down Barambah Creek and, when he arrived on scene, he could see only the roof of the floating motorhome.
“The couple is lucky to have their lives,” he told the Courier Mail. “There’s still a lot of water to come so God knows where that campervan will end up.”
The couple was reportedly in good spirits this morning. They were taken to Gayndah by police for food and a change of clothes.
Evacuation centres have established by the Gympie Regional Council at the Goomeri and Kilkivan Halls for Goomeri, Kilkivan and Woolooga residents after the unprecedented weather event.
The Kilkivan Hall is also helping guests at the Kilkivan Caravan Park caught out by rising waters from the creek next to Rossmore Rd.
The motorhomers’ lucky escape has strong similarities with an incident last November in which a grey nomad couple was forced to climb out of their caravan window to escape rising floodwaters in northern New South Wales.
What happened to the dog please
The dog is ok, was with them whem swimming out of the water.
My thought too! Where is their dog?
Just wondering if anyone has seen George. He is riding a black Harley and towing an Elite camper trailer. I left him at Calliope on Saturday morning. He went south heading home to Toowoomba but his phone has been playing up. He’s 72 yo with long grey hair and long beard. I reckon he may be around Biggenden to Ban Ban springs area. Police have been notified as a missing person. If anyone can shed some light on his whereabouts we would be grateful
Just letting everyone know that George has just turned up at his home. Been stuck on the side of the road for days due to floods
