Grey nomads sit tight as record rainfall lashes South Australia

Heavy rain and flooding is bringing chaos to parts of South Australia … and worse could be yet to come.

With some roads and tracks in the northern parts of the state already having been closed, grey nomads need to keep a close eye on the weather forecast.

According to 7News, there are fears that some towns may be completely cut off with a number of Outback stations having recorded 120mm of rain this morning in what has been described as the heaviest rainfall event in 30 years.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned the heavy rain is likely to continue as the low pressure system moves across the state, expected to cross over the coast on Monday.

It has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall in the Riverland, Flinders, North East Pastoral District and parts of the Mid-North.

Reports on 7News say that 150mm of rain is forecast in South Australia’s North East Pastoral area, while further south in the Flinders Ranges falls of up to 80mm are expected.

Swiftwater rescue strike teams are on standby in case anyone is washed away by floodwaters.

There have also been heavy falls in Victoria, with some parts of the state expected to cop up to 100m over the weekend.

For many grey nomads caught in the deluge, it is simply a matter of sitting tight, hoping their van doesn’t leak, and getting out the playing cards and the Monopoly.
