A 54-year-old woman has died in a tragic accident at a remote campsite near the Queensland/New South Wales border.

It is believed the woman – who was camping with her husband, their teenage child, a family friend and another child – passed away after falling into a campfire.

The accident happened at about 10pm on Tuesday at the campground at Gradys Creek north of Kyogle in inland New South Wales.

The Courier-Mail reports that reports that the other four campers had gone to a toilet block some distance away and when they returned they found the woman had fallen into a 44-gallon drum being used as a campfire.

Emergency services were called and three ambulance crews were sent to the campsite but the woman had died by the time they arrived.

“Emergency services responded to reports of a woman who had fallen into a fire at a camping ground along Gradys Creek Road, Gradys Creek,” a police statement said. “The 54-year-old Queensland woman died at the scene before the arrival of emergency services.”

Police said that initial inquiries led them to believe there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officers from Richmond Police District will prepare a report for the Coroner.
