Brutal cold snap leaves many grey nomads shivering

Published: May 29, 2023

Grey nomads not quite up in the tropics yet have been doing it tough the last little while, as temperatures in many parts of the country have plunged to frigid lows.

However, meteorologists say temperatures in the south-east at least are to be a little higher today.

Weatherzone reports a ‘slightly warmer airmass’ will come over the region, along with increased cloud cover.

But it’s still not going to be exactly ‘toasty’. 9News reports that Sydney is still set for a minimum temperature of 10 degrees, while Melbourne will go as low as nine degrees. Darwin remains the warmest place in the country, with a minimum of 17 degrees predicted for today.

It may sound chilly, but it’s definitely an improvement on Saturday morning when many capital cities recorded their coldest May morning in decades.

9News reports that the temperature at Perth Airport at 5:30am on Saturday was 1.1 degrees, the coldest May morning the airport has experienced in 59 years. And Sydney’s Observatory Hill recorded a temperature of 6.9°C at 7:04am, its coldest May morning in 24 years.

Additionally, multiple locations across Queensland, NSW, WA, and the NT registered their coldest May mornings in 5 to 11 years, with frost reported in all of those jurisdictions.

And things weren’t great in southern Queensland today with Courier Mail reporting record minimums. The newspaper says it was -1.3C in Warwick at 5.50am, with the ‘feels like’ temperature -4.7C.

Meanwhile, it says, it was -0.5C in Dalby, but felt like -4.2C; and 0.2C in Roma, but felt like -3.7C. Similar minimums were recorded in Oakey (-0.9C), Wellcamp Airport (0.8C) and Charleville (0.5C).

The Courier Mail says Central Queensland is also experiencing brutally cold temperatures with Clermont plunging to -0.1C, while it was 1.9C at Lochington and 2.2C at Rolleston Airport.
