Grey nomad charged with aggravated driving after caravan crash

Published: March 14, 2023

A 70-year-old grey nomad has been arrested and charged with aggravated driving after an horrific crash in South Australia.

The woman from Queensland was behind the wheel of a Ford SUV, which was towing a caravan, when it was in collision with a Toyota SUV at Avenue Range, near Lucindale, on Friday.

Police say the driver and occupants of the Toyota SUV – a 40-year-old woman and two children, aged 7 and 9 – sustained injuries and were taken to the Mount Gambier Hospital.

The driver was subsequently transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The 70-year-old grey nomad was taken to Naracoorte Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say that, following investigations, she was arrested and charged with aggravated driving without due care causing harm, and failing to give way.

She was bailed to appear in the Naracoorte Magistrates Court on May 17.

Police urge all drivers to pay attention on the roads and ensure they obey traffic rules at all times.

“The lives and safety of themselves, their passengers and other road users depends on it,” they said in a statement.

Nothing in the story to suggest that towing a caravan was in fact relevant

Looking at the photo and also one of the charges was failing to give way leads me to believe that the accident happened at an uncontrolled intersection, that is no give way or stop signs at any of the crossing points. In those cases the old fashioned rule of ‘give way to the right’ applies.
I have come across a number of such intersection in country South Australia – there are no give way or stop signs in front so without any other warning drivers assume that they have right of way straight ahead.

You can’t tell what happened unless you saw the whole picture.
