Serious injuries reported following two separate crashes involving caravans

Published: April 4, 2025

There have been another couple of nasty accidents involving caravans over the last couple of days.

Yesterday, three cars and a caravan collided on a stretch of the New England Highway near the Queensland town of Ballandean.

It is understood that one of the vehicles was towing a caravan and flipped.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson told the Gold Coast Bulletin that a woman received serious head, arm and leg injuries and was taken to Stanthorpe Hospital before being flown via LifeFlight rescue helicopter to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

A second man in his 40s, with head and limb injuries in a potentially life-threatening condition, and a third patient in his 70s with back injuries were also taken to Stanthorpe Hospital.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson told the Bulletin that crews had to remove a door of the vehicle to free the man in his 40s who is believed to have been trapped for some time.

It’s understood the woman was the driver of a white Toyota LandCruiser, while the second male in his 40s was the driver of a Mazda CX5 and the man in his 70s is believed to be the driver of the third vehicle which was towing a caravan.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the incident and anyone with information or relevant vision is asked to contact police.

And on Wednesday, a man in his 40s was left fighting for life after a crash on the Bruce Highway near Kuttabal in Queensland’s Mackay region.

Queensland Police Service District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Lisa Mansfield, who was on scene, told the Courier Mail newspaper that a silver Toyota ute towing a caravan was hit by a silver station wagon which came out of Narpi Rd and – as a result – the driver of the station wagon was trapped in the car.

The 41-year-old was freed from the car and taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a life-threatening condition, before being flown to Townsville University Hospital.

Two other people were assessed following the incident but refused further treatment.

The caravan was left crumpled and destroyed following the crash.

Wonder if a towing course would have prevented this one

If you read it said a Station Wagon came out of a side road and hit the Caravan so learning how to tow would not help

Was wondering how long that ‘tired’ topic would come up.

How many of these accidents are caused by the infestation of complete wombat drivers on our roads who are still munching on the Weeties from the packet they discovered their licence in.
In my travels I have had to avoid several possible collisions with said wombats which is not easy to do with 3 tonnes of van on the back.
It would be good to find out the results of the police investigation into these accidents because it might be surprising that the van driver is not always at fault.

Would it have anything to do with the government’s massive immigration polices bringing in ppl who have no concept of our way of driving? Probably not in this particular situation.

Don’t sensationalise the caravan without the facts of what happened.

True Brian just being facetious seems every time a van is in strife it’s the towing ability not the facts

I wish we would get the end results of a police report. It is not the fault of the caravan driver all the time. This open end reporting is always slanted against the RV owner.

Agreed, we need some feedback back regarding the circumstances and causes of the accidents
These articles as written are well intended but do more to damage the reputation of caravan usage. Dear editor, please dive into some police reports to find real lessons to be learnt.
