Authorities hunt croc that took bite out of man’s leg at boat ramp

Published: February 23, 2023

The large saltwater crocodile that attacked a man at a boat ramp in Far North Queensland is being sought by wildlife rangers.

The reptile apparently lunged from the water at a Bloomfield boat ramp, north of Port Douglas, and took ‘a large bite’ out of a man’s leg late yesterday afternoon.

The 37-year-old had been taking his dog for a drink of water when the attack took place. 9News reports that he was dragged into Bloomfield River by the croc before he was able to escape to land.

The status of the dog is unknown.

The injured man was flown to Cairns for emergency treatment where he is believed to now be in a stable condition in hospital.

Wildlife Officers from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) are now set to target the crocodile and remove it from the area, in line with the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.

The Queensland Government has said the incident ‘is a timely reminder for people to be Crocwise in croc country and not to be complacent with their own safety or the safety of their family or pets when they are in or near the water’.

This is the first crocodile attack on a human in Queensland since November 2021, when a man was attacked at the McIvor River, 50 kilometres north of Cooktown.
