Hooray! The march of the dump points continues apace

Published: January 15, 2025

In good news for most grey nomads, the march of the dump point continues.

Rockhampton in north Queensland is the latest spot to open a new dump point which will be free for travellers to use. A potable water refill station is also available at the new dump point location at the Explore Rockhampton Visitor Information Centre. Access is via Ferguson Street, Allenstown, behind the centre.

Rockhampton Regional Council says the facility provides an environmentally friendly way for caravan users to dispose of grey and black water, along with sewage waste.

The dump point is available 24/7 for convenient use by travellers.

“In addition to waste disposal, the site also features a potable water refill station located on the amenities block behind the dump point, offering safe, drinkable water for human consumption,” said the council in a statement. “Caravanners are welcome to refill water bottles for drinking, cooking, or other domestic purposes when travelling.”

It says the free service supports responsible waste disposal and provides an essential resource for caravanners in the Rockhampton Region.

A second caravan waste disposal point is also nearing completion at Cedric Archer Park, Gracemere, with works expected to be completed early next year.

That’s actually a nice spot to stop and have lunch or a rest, so good on the council.
There’s also one on the north side off the highway in Nuttall St (unless it’s bee removed recently)

We always support places that offer water and dump point facilities. Inglewood qld is a great example…water filling station and dump point, free camp on river. Great IGA and cafes etc. Very friendly locals.

Many people use a dump point in a town & then keep on driving.
They don’t feel obligated to stop & shop, they just want to empty their cassette.
I think there should be a coin in the slot system to use dump points.
The setting up, maintenance & emptying of these dump points cost shires money.
Not everything in life can be free.

Mark. I’m sorry, but your opinion that nothing in life is free is incorrect. Advice, wether we want it or not, and generally we don’t is free.

When we travel usually there is 3 vans & towns where we use the dump stations sometimes mean 3 x 4×4’s refuelled & always hit the Bakeries, pies & bread & vanilla slices for rating & of course the belly & then local Butchers to rate the winner of Best Sausage of the State Award whatever year they won & IGA or FOODWORKS to top up supplies & if the Pubs or Bottle O opened top up Booze & occasionally a trip to Mitre 11 if something is required, mainly Gas refills..so many $’s spent between towns i think contribute s to using the Dump & Water facilities…only wish all the local councils would supply these facilities & then ask the local businesses re any new sales & if they backed this proposal ..cheers & not trying to offend anyone

Let’s see! Public toilets, parks, roads, footpaths, libraries, rubbish bins,

Are they not free for all to use?

Yes a Small fee of a Gold Coin / $2.00 would be O.K. as long as it is publicised

Maintenance costs of these site is negligible. Of course, not everything is free, but some services can be free, like beach showers, toilets etc., including dump points.

Unfortunately Council Costs too are going UP &UP &UP just take a look at the COST of Living these days and you will understand that a SMALL FEE to help pay for the Service especially the Potable / DRINKING WATER/ H2o which is expensive to treat from any source done to POTABLE DRINKING WATER.

That’s correct until irresponsible people dump wipes etc that clog it. Many dump points have been closed because of this,

Most support towns with dump points . I may point out coin in a slot is not a solution as such devices are raided /smashed up often by others after the coin and the mainteance is usually higher than justified. This is why many towns now have free BBQs because when they were coin in the slot for payment there was continued mainteance because of damage.

So you have no qualms about using a council built and maintained public toilet? Why the distinction?

Common sense should always prevail… But you can’t force me to stop and shop if my fridge is already full… Maybe a coin operated coffee machine next to the dump point…

Depending on the length of our stay whether a nearby dump point is a necessity!
The accessibility to the dump point is the most important thing to us as we are in a 13.5m combination with a holding tank, we have found a lot of Dump points that are not suitable for vehicles with holding tanks 🙁

The drain height above ground level is important and can be made better by having a raised bed where the RV stops to cause downhill flow. Gravity is free.

Many are too high to drop grey water from tanks. I know many camps allow grey on ground or around shrubs but some don’t. It’s great there are more but they need to be more accessible for caravans and motorhomes.

Grant, putting Grey Water form a Caravan / Motor Home is O.K. as long as the frequency of doing so is NOT every day in the same spot or too near a waterway as ingress of this can damage the environment and if left to pool too long it can develop a Strong Odour.

I always thought that these tanks were there for the purpose of dumping the contents of the toilet into and that the tap water was just for giving the cassette a rinse.. … Now all of a sudden it seems to be that we have a problem with where to dispose of the shower water and the small amount of water used to get the washing up done….

We always have issues finding potable water and dump points, good to see some one doing something about it, When we find potable water we spend money in that town.

John

Why oh why didn’t they install this at the free spot. Not much Council foresight there!

No need. Anywhere in town is perfect. (many free camps don’t have a sewer connection)

John

The free camp has a major shopping centre across the road and toilets nearby. Plenty of sewer connections and town water.

“nearby” might mean a $10000 cost to connect. Surely not too much to ask you to make a short detour on the way to or from the free RV camping site.

John it would depend on the availability of a connected sewerage System

Absolutely. Rocky has been lacking these facilities for a long time. It’s such a nice city to visit and this will certainly encourage travellers to have a look around.

Is it readily accessible to big rigs with waste tanks?

Robert Simpson

Well yes I too would use these facilities if required and as for the Comment by 86GTS please NOTE: I am a RETIRED SANITARY / WATER SERVUICE PLUMBER & you should be advised that a Waste Dump Point that is Connected to a reticulated Sewerage System would not require it to be regularly EMPTIED, only maybe Hygienically Cleaned on a RAEGULAR Basis.

Does not appear to be a ground level grey water point. Most dump points at about 230mm above ground are two high for us to dump grey water into using our pipe, has to bucketed to the dump point with a small bucket. Some Councils provide a ground level access point for grey water hoses. It would be great if all dump points included this feature.

Then there is the ACT without a single free public dump point. Well done Canberra .. NOT

Just advising the Dump Point on the Northside of Rockhampton in Nuttal St is closing. Therefore no dump point to the north till Sarina.
