The importance of dump point availability in attracting grey nomads and other travellers to country areas appears to be getting through … and making a difference.
Queensland’s Rockhampton Regional Council is the latest to recognise this fact, and has just announced it has wrapped up work on a second free caravan waste dump point.
Mayor Tony Williams said the dump point has been installed at Cedric Archer Park in Gracemere to service travellers heading west to the Queensland Outback.
“Works are now complete, and the dump point is now ready for public use,” he said. “This service offers an environmentally friendly solution for caravan users to dispose of grey and black water, as well as sewage waste, with it available 24/7 for convenient use by travellers.”

Mayor Williams said the council was pleased to deliver another dump point to the region, strategically placed to encourage travellers to stop in Gracemere.
“By locating it in an easily accessible spot at Cedric Archer Park, travellers can park and enjoy use of the park that features picnic tables and seating, water play, pump track, playground and plenty of space to stretch your legs,” he said. “We are encouraging caravanners to stop in at the local businesses and enjoy doing their shopping with relative ease being so close to the Capricorn Highway.”
Divisional Councillor Edward Oram said the installation of the dump point at Cedric Archer Park was a great win for the Gracemere community.
“By installing this service at the park, we hope travellers will not only enjoy the fantastic amenities at Cedric Archer but also take the time to explore our town and everything it has to offer,” Cr Oram said. “I have a deep appreciation for Gracemere’s wonderful, tight-knit community, and I hope all the travellers will come to love it just as much as I do.”
Another caravan waste dump point and potable water refill station is located at the Explore Rockhampton Visitor Information Centre, with access via Ferguson Street, Allenstown, behind the centre.

Dump point is no longer important at all, have just changed to OGO Composting toilet.
They will come for water anyway
So where do you empty your OGO Toilet. ???
Wondering what you do with your grey water? Hoping that you use a dump point responsibly
Dump Points are definitely important. As are clean water filling points. Unexpectedly I often have more problems finding water than I do finding dump points. I don’t even mind paying for the water if its available!
To add to this we also try to spend money in towns that provide facilities like low cost camping, water fill or dump points. This might be a fuel fill up, shopping or money spent in a cafe.
Towns that don’t welcome travellers we just drive past.
I find this “we drive past” a bit of a Phurphy. Lets be honest of you need
something (eg Fuel, food etc )you will stop and buy it anyway.
i do agree that these facilities (maintianed and installed by local ratepayers) are very useful useful and welcome, but the threat of driving past just is not real
Not important at all as we have a composting toilet.
Speak for yourself Thank you
Where do you put your grey water?
So Susan. What do you do with urine. Should go to dump point as is black water.
Brian, do you ever have a pee on a tree?
how i envy these peolpe who never have to wee so have no need for a dump point to empty untreated, smelly, daily urine into
We empty our toilet cassette & go.
Having a dump point would never make us interested in staying in a location.
it’s all right to have a composting loo but most of us don’t so it’s a great idea if councils are putting them in I would also like to see some water stations put in the cost of filling the water tanks is minimal
Dump points and water fill stations are something that I definitely look for when planning a trip. The more accessible they are the better for us. I’m a bit surprised by responses from those with composting toilets. I get the composting part for solid waste but where do you empty liquid waste when travelling if not a dump point?
They probably tun on the tap in a rest area and let it run out on the ground.
Dump points are essential for the travelling public, well at least for the responsible ones anyway. We always use a dump point in a town and spend some cash there while doing so, supporting local businesses by buying fuel, groceries, take away, coffee etc and any tourist attractions as well.
I agree. If the town has spent money installing and maintaining a dump point, it’s worth my time to look around, buy some lunch and check out their camping areas. It is a draw card for RVers not to just bypass the town.
once again no planning, how do you get a 11mt bus anywhere near that one to empty with a shortish hose.
Plan to get a longerish hose. Most van/ tow vehicles are longer than 11m and we don’t have problems.
Vans mostly have cassettes I have a black tank and 4mt hose for the bus
Buy a longer hose
Had trouble finding longer than 4mt hose it’s a 90mm fitting
As with most councils the people that design things never use them. They seem to only think about caravans with cassette when designing dump points. I have a 9m motorhome and a 6m hose and can still only use about half the dump points I come across. .
Put up a sign, ” No wipes “. May help to prevent it getting clogged!
Extremely important to me. I wonder what the opinions of the people with there composting setups would be if they did not have them. I bet a completely different remark.
Why Thank you to the Rockhampton Council for acknowledgment of the need for this dump point. My it get well used.
This is probably the most important comment here, thanks.
Yes..I agree..!!
refreshing from the negative comments..
When travellers run out of silos to visit & photograph they can start on dump points.
That’ll keep them busy. LOL.
The other issue here is how is a caravan park allowed to operate without a dump point on site?
Extra dump points are always welcome but unless cheaper options for camping are available, many will empty their waste and keep on traveling.
We only ever stop at places with a dump point.
Not all of us have composting toilets and when we travel we always look at what facilities are on offer to help us make a decision to stop or not. Well done for the people that have done this.
