‘Irresponsible dog owners in van parks spoil it for the rest of us’

Grey nomads not sure about dogs in caravan parks

Grey nomads Peter and Gwen L travel with their beloved pet dog … but they completely understand why some caravan parks don’t exactly welcome them with open arms. Here, Gwen explains why.

‘We take great care in making sure we keep our dog on the lead and use dog bags to pick up droppings at all times. Quite often these doggy bags are supplied by councils.

But in the past three months of travelling we have come across several dog owners not doing the right thing!

In Port Hedland recently my husband had to ask a dog owner to take her dog from our site and please tie it up. She had previously retrieved it from our site three times.

And, on another occasion, at  Burra Showground, a dog actually entered our caravan and when I returned from our 4WD, I found it eating our dog food (as the door was open for leaving the site).

When I removed it from our van, it then jumped up onto the front seat of our 4WD. After removing it from there, we approached the owner and his reply was: “I did not know where it was”.

And the caretaker had previously spoken to this dog owner about keeping his dog under control! Thoughtless people like this prevent us from being able to enjoy caravan parks in many places.
