As motorhomes get larger and more luxurious, they’ve actually created problems for their users … they’ve become more unwieldy on the road and it got harder to find a campsite that’s got the space to handle them.
Slideouts have offered a partial solution to these issues, but the newly unveiled Extane concept has literally taken the RV to the next level … by expanding upwards.
The Extane would extend vertically to generate space and would be electric and autonomous. Its roof would be capable of extending up to reveal two rooftop terraces. The vehicle would feature a master bedroom and all the amenities of existing RVs. When travelling, the upper floors would fold on themselves with specially built furniture. The terrace’s ramps could also be folded away.
The brainchild of Indian designer , Asish Thulkar, the Extane could park in much smaller sites at caravan parks and back at the owner’s home when not travelling.
Accorodng to a report in the Canadian Globe & Mail newspaper, the shower located on the first floor would double as a lift to save space. A large video display integrated in the windshield could be used to watch movies at night from within the Extane or show a map of the itinerary during trips.
Special fabrics or power windows would be used to cover the third floor’s walls. Barbecue cooking could be done on the fourth floor.
Probably, the biggest worry for grey nomads contemplating hitting the road in one of these high-rise motorhomes would be parking in high wind areas where there might be a risk of being blown over.
