‘Tourists are going to double our population … and we want to be ready!’

Published: December 15, 2022

Like many popular coastal destinations, Streaky Bay on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is gearing up for a bumper tourist season … and it’s doing all it can to be ready for a procession of grey nomads and others.

The local council says the town’s population basically doubles over the busy holiday period, and it is doing what it can to be ready for the challenges this influx brings.

The District Council of Streaky Bay says some of the steps it will be taking include:

  • Opening of the Wells St car park specifically for caravans and long vehicles
  • Introduction of camping permits and booking system for the Perlubie Beach and Tractor Beach camp areas
  • Promotion of camping spots, other than Perlubie Beach to elevate pressure on the popular camping area
responsible camping
  • Strengthening of procedures to deal with illegal camping on private property
  • Grading of roads to popular tourism destinations
  • The placement of extra bins at key locations
  • The placement of portaloos at key locations
  • The facilitation of extra rubbish services when required
  • Deployment of authorised officers to patrol areas across the district
  • Rolling out a responsible camping promotional campaign, covering issues such as rubbish disposal, only using a public toilet or toilet in a vehicle, disposing of wastewater responsibly, and only travelling on marked roads or tracks.

Mayor Travis Barber believes the initiatives are very important.

“We want to continue to be welcoming hosts to people wishing to enjoy the uniquely Streaky Bay experience, and we expect our visitors to respect the special places and communities as they pass through,” he said. “We hope that this campaign assists in encouraging these respectful behaviours”.
