Rod flies into windscreen after caravans collide

Published: August 23, 2021

A driver was lucky to escape serious injury after two caravans attempting to squeeze by each other in a narrow bridge swiped each other.

The contact sent a metal rod flying from one of the vehicles and into the windscreen of a following vehicle.

The incident happened on a bridge in the North Burnett area, inland from Bundaberg in central Queensland.

Gayndah officer in charge Sergeant, Don Auld, told the Courier-Mail that the rod flew off and shot through the windscreen of a Pajero station wagon, which was travelling behind one of the caravans.

The rod hit the front seat, narrowly missing the driver’s shoulder, but fortunately no one was injured.

Sergeant Auld urged drivers to take care when crossing narrow bridges and to be aware that two vehicles may not always be able to cross at the same time, despite having two lanes.

Yes I’ve come across this. I will pull over and give way for sure.

City people please just give way our bridges sometimes are narrow . You don’t have to be first across you just have to be safe.

What city are you referring to? How do we know it wasn’t someone local to the area and misjudged. It’s like what we were told driving army vehicles, watch the country roads as the locals drive faster than everyone else because they know the roads????? It’s not a blame game as there are fools in cities and rural locations.

That’s what CB’s are for. A must when travelling and a “I’ve got the bridge” call is def. in order…..take care people. We are a big rig and we see it often

Narrow bridges and people racing (so it seems) to be first across always bothers me. I don’t know the circumstances here, but in my book, patience and consideration for others is always the best policy. Just glad nobody was injured.

Another two clowns towing vans who don’t know there widths or position on the road correctly
Yep no need for a accreditation to to larger width/length than the tow vehicle on your licence

Yep, agree, everyone is in such a hurry these days and there is NO REPECT between drives anymore, especially those who are towing and do not know there widths.

Qld is renowned for narrpw bridges. Just needs a bit of common sense – if it looks quite narrow then err on the side of caution & don’t push it.

Seems it’s about time (maybe long overdue) that drivers be specially licenced to pull a caravan – would certainly get some of the incompetent and dangerous drivers off the roads.
