A 4WD and caravan have been completely destroyed by fire following an accident on the Great Southern Highway in Western Australia.
Miraculously, the two adults and three children in the vehicle received only minor injuries from the crash, which happened on Sunday about 15 kilometres south of Wagin.
A police spokesperson told the Grey Nomads that the vehicles did not suffer really catastrophic damage as a result of the crash itself. However, they were totally destroyed by a subsequent fire that was extinguished by Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
News of this incident further cements a horror start to 2021 in terms of caravan accidents.
Just yesterday a man was killed when his 4WD towing a caravan crashed into a tree off the Bruce Highway in Queensland.
And earlier this month a grey nomad died and his wife was injured in an accident on the Oxley Highway west of Wauchope in New South Wales, after their Prado towing a caravan failed to negotiate a sweeping right-hand bend.
Just a few days before that tragedy, a teenager died after his vehicle was in collision with a grey nomad couple’s 4WD and caravan on the Lachlan Valley Way near Cowra in the New South Wales Central West. The driver of the 4WD, a 78-year-old man, and a passenger, an 80-year-old woman, were airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition. Another teenager in the other car also suffered serious injuries.

Proves we all should have an endorsed licence before we tow anything behind a vehicle. I have an endorsed licence and have driven trucks and caravans and travelled with other caravaners. Even those caravaners make elementary mistakes of not having proper review mirrors and not regularly looking in them to see what is behind them. As we all know drivers who don’t want to sit on the posted speed limit is their right but it is also the right of a driver to sit on the posted speed limit. A common problem occurs when they come to an overtaking lane or straight stretch and speed up. This may to be arrogance or just trying to speed up to satisfy the drivers behind who think they are travelling to slow. Most caravaners state the reason they travel below the posted speed is for economy and cost and are not in a hurry to get to their next destination. If that’s the case why don’t they pull over and let the traffic pass or not speed up when there is a possibility of somebody can overtake. They had a major mechanical failure. Not sure an endorsed license would have helped.
On most of the Bruce Highway north of Rockhampton & many of the western highways have road shoulder so poor, putting a wheel over a 4 or 6 inch drop off would surely cause dramas
Is a towing licence going to stop these accidents? A driving licence hasn’t stopped road accidents involving other types of vehicles. You can’t prevent human error with any kind of licence unfortunately
I wonder whether the fridge was still on running on gas. May explain why everything went up in smoke.
