Man dies in Bruce Highway accident involving a caravan, a truck and a ute

A man is dead, and two others have been injured, in a crash involving a caravan, truck and ute on the Bruce Highway, north of Brisbane.

Police say initial investigations indicate that a utility towing a caravan was travelling north along the Bruce Highway at Bauple, south of Maryborough, yesterday afternoon when a tyre dislodged and struck a truck, travelling in the opposite direction.

The truck then hit a third vehicle, another utility, which was travelling north behind the caravan.

The driver of the third vehicle, a 59-year-old Gympie man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The truck driver, a 58-year-old Sunshine Coast man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The other driver, a 44-year-old Cairns woman, was not physically injured, and is assisting police with investigations.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

It is the second fatal crash on the highway this week after three people died when a bus and caravan collided head-on at Gumlu near Townsville on Sunday.

I have watched the dashcam video of the first accident described above. The info is incorrect in that the police reported that a tyre dislodged from the caravan. Had it been just a tyre there may not have been such devastating result but it was the complete off-side wheel from the caravan which struck the truck causing it to lose directional control. I have seen several instances of wheels departing from caravans and regularly check-tighten my caravan wheel nuts and a couple of times, have found nuts noy as tight as they should have been.

Consider carrying a torque wrench and regularly tightening to the prescribed amount. Helps to prevent wheel studs from stretching and/or breaking at odd times

Over the years I have seen a few wheels come off cars,trailers etc.More of these have came off because over overtightened wheel nuts sheering off the studs rather than loose nuts coming undone.Wheel nut should be torqued to about 109 ft lbs max.A 100 kg man standing on the end of a wheel spanner is NOT the correct way to tighten wheel nuts
