The hottest place on Earth! SA Outback swelters in sizzling temperatures

Published: December 7, 2023

Grey nomads out and about in the South Australian Outback – and in many other areas of the country, too – have been sweating it out as temperatures sizzle.

According to 7News, Marree became the hottest place on Earth yesterday when temperatures in the remote SA town reached a scorching 46.4C. It’s not much better today, although it may cool down slightly in following days.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a heatwave alert for the area, warning that severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, those with medical conditions, and people who are unwell.

It says severe heatwave conditions continue for now, with locations likely to be impacted including APY Lands, Coober Pedy, Hawker, Jamestown, Leigh Creek, Moomba, Marree, Oodnadatta and Roxby Downs. Temperatures are expected to ease from the southwest over the weekend with a milder change.

Quoting El Dorado Weather, 7News reports that Australia was also home to the top 15 hottest places in the world, including locations in WA, South Australia and New South Wales.

It says five states reached extreme temperatures of over 44C yesterday, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying high temperatures are expected to continue until the end of the week.

Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury told 7News that heatwave conditions were not likely to start easing until ‘early next week’.

People are being urged to avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day, to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and hats and stay hydrated.

BOM says people in affected areas are urged to use fans or air-conditioners; or seek out a place to keep cool, such as a library, community centre or shopping centre; and to close windows and draw blinds; and curtains or awnings early in the day.

Close to 3 pm and 27 deg C Mid Coast NSW with a gentle sea breeze, BoM forecast via red alert on my phone earlier this week for the week ahead, and I thought summer again, nothing new and it isn’t.
