Popular campsite in north-west Tassie is to close ‘temporarily’

Published: March 16, 2022

As expected, a council in north-west Tasmania has voted to temporarily close a popular – but troubled – camping spot.

At a Kentish Council meeting last night, there was overwhelming support to shut Kentish Park to overnight visitors. The Advocate newspaper reports that the closure of the campsite will come into effect immediately after Easter.

The move follows ongoing concerns of anti-social behaviour being reported at the site. This culminated in a serious incident on New Year’s Day in which police allege a man drove his car through a tent, resulting in one child being sent to the Intensive Care Unit.

Kentish Council Mayor Tim Wilson said there was overwhelming support for the motion.

“I’m glad the council decided to temporarily close it,” he said. “We really need breathing space to look at the whole site … part of the motion was to give residents plenty of notice – we’re aware this is a popular time for campers.”

Kentish Park will still be open for day use, with upgrades to some facilities, including the toilets, already planned.

Cr Wilson told the Advocate that he would also be reaching out to the state government for their advice around next steps and for clarity around a long-term vision for the area.

He said the feeling is that councillors do want the site re-opened fully eventually.

However, he warned that there was much to be discussed before, and if, that could happen.
