Woman, 79, injured after being run over by reversing caravan

Published: January 12, 2023

A 79-year-old woman has suffered a ‘significant’ leg injury after being run over by a reversing car and caravan in a suburban street.

Emergency services were called to a home on the outskirts of Newcastle in New South Wales yesterday morning.

“An off-duty police officer was walking past at the time, and with help from several neighbours, rendered assistance to the woman who suffered a significant leg injury,” police said in a statement. “NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and treated the woman, before taking her to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.”

Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District are investigating the incident.

Ambulance at caravan accident

This accident comes just days after a similar incident in New Zealand.  In that instance, a 68-year-old man was reversing the caravan while his 67-year-old wife was behind him guiding his driving. The wife was accidentally pinned between the caravan and a concrete pillar. She was taken to Dunedin Hospital with suspected broken ribs and a possible pelvis fracture.

These sorts of accidents are, sadly, not all that uncommon … and they can have tragic consequences.

Back in September last year, a woman in her 60s died after she was struck by a reversing camper trailer in Bunbury in West Australia’s south.

The best advice I can offer is to purchase a pair of UHF walkie talkies.
Then the person guiding the van into the parking bay can stand well clear and talk the driver in without risk.
Most people do not realise that the driver reversing the van has a very limited rear view and often will stand out of range of the mirrors. This leads to the often hilarious (for other watches) hand waving and shouting accompanied by lots of dashing back and forth and of course the risk of backing over one’s partner which could be by design by the 10th attempt of getting the van positioned.
The radios eliminate all of that and restore calm and remove the risk element to the whole exercise albeit removing the fun for other bystanders.

We always use our walkie-talkie when reversing our van. That way hubby knows everything that’s going on behind the van.
